Sound solution for padel noise pollution
September 2024 - February 2025
For my first master’s project, my group and I had to provide a noise-canceling solution that satisfy the sound regulation levels towards padel noise. Working with a start-up providing portable padel courts this project brought many challenges such as; functionality, portability, marketability, and sustainability. During this project, I focussed on the frame structure and the visuals of the product. This allowed me to learn the program Unreal Engine and create video and photo renders.
DESIGN PROCESS
The final product includes an acoustic panel and a steel frame with a bench for people to watch padel and socialize. The acoustic panel functions as it absorbs and reflects sound. It contains carefully designed Helmholtz resonators, which will ‘catch’ a varied range of frequencies. The overall aesthetic of the product matches that of the client, resulting in a product that is portable, easy to set up, and allows for branding opportunities.
As this project was researched-focussed, the functionality of the acoustic panel had to be validated. A test setup was created, and the results showed the desired noise reduction across different frequencies. Next to that, a scaled prototype of the frame was created after many iterations on structural types.
